Soft Pretzels With Beer Cheese Sauce

Soft Pretzels With Beer Cheese Sauce

I love football. I’m a Denver Broncos fan through and through…despite the fact that they’ve had a rough go the past few years. My dad started taking me and my sister to the games back in the 80’s and our favorite part was always the food. When I met Scott, another huge Broncos fan, we started going to the games together and my favorite part of the game became the actual game. Who am I kidding, my favorite part remains the food.

My favorite game day food in no particular order is as follows: Hot dogs, soft pretzel with cheese, nachos, Skittles and mini donuts. In the morning before each game, I would start thinking about what I was going to get to eat upon arrival art the stadium. I would change my mind multiple times before locking in my final decision. Whatever I didn’t choose on that game day got moved up in line for the next game. It’s not an exact science but it worked for me!

With the Super Bowl just days away, I had to make a stadium style snack to enjoy while watching the game (commercials). I decided to go with homemade soft pretzels with beer cheese sauce and it was the smartest decision I’ve made in a while…besides deciding against getting bangs. These pretzels were so easy to make. I used Alton Brown’s recipe because he knows his stuff and I trust him completely.

You can make these and the cheese sauce today or tomorrow and just warm them up on game day.

For the beer cheese sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 3/4 cup beer
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 heaping cups grated white cheddar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Melt the butter in a medium sauce pan over medium-low heat, whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Add the beer and milk and stir for about 3 minutes until the mixture is slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon. Stir in the dijon, garlic powder, Worcestershire and cheese and stir until the cheese is melted. Season with salt and pepper and serve warm with the pretzels. Enjoy the game!
