Shamrock Shake

Shamrock Shake

What started as a way to pull in customers back in 1970, turned into a minty green craze! The Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s is pure nostalgia for me. I looked forward to getting one in March every year as a kid.

A couple years ago, when Scott and I were driving back to Cody from Denver, I decided it had been too long since my last shake and I wanted to try one again. I was a bit disappointed after just one sip. The flavor was different than I remembered, it was much sweeter with way too much of a mint kick. I actually couldn’t even finish it. Was this the end of the road for me and the Shamrock Shake? Saddened by the thought, I decided to make my own shake right here at home. The result…a light green vanilla bean shake with a hint of mint and a cherry on top!

St. Patrick’s Day is saved!

Ingredients for 2 shakes:

  • 3 cups vanilla bean ice cream
  • 1/4-1/2 cups whole milk, depending on how thick you want it
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon mint extract (not peppermint)
  • 6 drops green food coloring

Directions:

Place everything in a blender and bland until smooth.

Pour between two glasses, top with whipped cream, cherries and sprinkles and enjoy!

For the whipped cream:

  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Whip the cream in a medium bowl until it just starts to thicken, add in the powdered sugar and vanilla and whip until stiff peaks form.

For serving:

2 maraschino cherries

Green sprinkles (optional)
