Brown Butter Crispy Treats

Who doesn’t love a Rice Krispie Treat? It’s a childhood favorite that still holds up today. They couldn’t be more simple to make, use just three simple ingredients and don’t require an oven! I’ve been making different versions of them forever…Cinnamon Toast Crunch treats are a crowd pleaser with Fruity Pebbles treats being a close second. When I stumbled upon this recipe I knew I had to try it and ever since then, I’ve never looked back. These brown butter crispy treats are my go-to when I need to bring a dessert to a gathering or when I want to have something sweet on hand at home. All the classic ingredients are used with the addition of sea salt and extra butter. I also fold extra mini marshmallows in at the end so there are little pillows of heaven dotted throughout each treat. Once you master the art of brown butter, you’ll find any excuse to add it into your recipes. There are countless ways to use it. It’s perfect in just about any baked good, drizzled on top of ravioli or ladled over steak to name a few. I used it today to take these crispy treats to a whole other level, make them as soon as possible, you won’t be sorry!
Ingredients:
- 1 stick of butter (save the wrapper, you’ll use it to press the treats into the pan)
- 1 10 oz bag of mini marshmallows
- Heaping 1/4 tsp coarse sea salt
- 6 cups Rice Krispies
- 1/2 bag mini marshmallows
Directions:
Butter an 8-inch square cake pan
In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. It will melt, then foam, then turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty. Stir frequently, scraping up any bits from the bottom. Don’t take your eyes off the pot the period between the time the butter begins to brown and the point where it burns is often less than a minute.
As soon as the butter takes on a nutty color, turn the heat off and stir in the marshmallows. The residual heat from the melted butter should be enough to melt them. Stir until smooth.
Remove the pot from the stove and stir in the salt then the cereal, then fold in half a bag of mini marshmallows. Quickly spread into prepared pan and press Ito all corners using the butter wrapper. Cool completely, cut into squares and enjoy!
My all time favorite! You can’t eat just one! Addictive!
Same! So addictive.
